Itineraries · adaptable sketches

Sample routes for a 240-hour China transit

Practical, scannable ideas built around four major TWOV hubs: Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xi’an. Treat these as travel-blog sketches — not visas, bookings, or guarantees. Stay inside permitted areas and exit within your allowed hours.

Disclaimer Confirm that your entry/exit ports are on the designated TWOV list and that each city you visit sits inside the permitted stay area for that region (especially Sichuan’s named-city list around Chengdu). Policies change — verify with NIA and your airline before flying.

How to use these sketches

  • Beijing (PEK / PKX)
  • Shanghai (PVG / SHA)
  • Chengdu (TFU / CTU)
  • Xi’an (XIY)
  • Aim for 7–9 active days inside a 240-hour window so weather, queues, and train delays don’t push you over.
  • Enter and leave via designated ports; HSR between these hubs is usually fine when both ends sit in permitted areas.
  • Keep your onward third-country/region ticket and hotel addresses handy for immigration questions.
  • Swap days freely — the point is pacing, not a rigid checklist.

1) Imperial north: Beijing → Xi’an (~8 days)

Best for first-timers HSR ~4–5.5 hours Enter PEK/PKX · exit XIY (or reverse)
  1. Day 1 — Arrive Beijing. Clear TWOV, hotel check-in (registration usually automatic), gentle walk around Wangfujing or a nearby hutong. Early night after the flight.
  2. Day 2 — Forbidden City & Jingshan. Book the palace timed entry in advance when possible; climb Jingshan for the roofscape view.
  3. Day 3 — Temple of Heaven + hutongs. Morning park life at Tiantan; afternoon rickshaw-free wander in Nanluoguxiang or Shichahai — keep it local, not rushed.
  4. Day 4 — Great Wall day trip. Mutianyu or a less crowded section via organized transfer or public+taxi combo; return to Beijing same evening.
  5. Day 5 — Summer Palace or 798, then evening HSR to Xi’an. Pack light for the train; passport ready at the station.
  6. Day 6 — Terracotta Warriors. Half-day site + museum; evening Muslim Quarter snacks (watch oil and spice levels).
  7. Day 7 — Xi’an city walls & Bell/Drum towers. Bike or walk a wall segment; tea break in the old city.
  8. Day 8 — Buffer / depart Xi’an. Keep this day light for outbound immigration. If you have margin, Big Wild Goose Pagoda area.

Stay-area note: Beijing municipality + Shaanxi province (entire province per NIA expansion reporting). Cross-province HSR is consistent with the national cross-region rule inside permitted areas.

2) East coast classic: Shanghai focus (~7 days)

Urban + easy day trips Enter/exit PVG or SHA Optional Jiangsu/Zhejiang hops if within permitted areas
  1. Day 1 — Arrive Shanghai. Pudong or Hongqiao to hotel; Bund promenade at dusk if energy allows.
  2. Day 2 — Bund, Yu Garden area, old French Concession stroll. Metro-heavy day; save feet with short taxi hops.
  3. Day 3 — Museums & skyline. Shanghai Museum or modern art stop; evening Lujiazui view from a public riverside angle.
  4. Day 4 — Water town day trip. Zhujiajiao or similar (confirm the town sits in a permitted province/area before you go).
  5. Day 5 — Suzhou or Hangzhou day trip by HSR. Gardens (Suzhou) or West Lake (Hangzhou) — both provinces are in the 24-region scheme.
  6. Day 6 — Neighborhood day. Tianzifang/Xintiandi lightly, or quieter riverside coffee and laundry/buffer time.
  7. Day 7 — Depart. Build in metro/maglev/airport express time; international check-in queues run long.

Stay-area note: Shanghai municipality; Jiangsu and Zhejiang are fully listed permitted provinces for cross-province travel under the 240-hour scheme.

3) West China flavors: Chengdu → Xi’an (~8–9 days)

Food + heritage Flight or long HSR between hubs Enter TFU/CTU · exit XIY (or reverse)
  1. Day 1 — Arrive Chengdu. Teahouse reset in People’s Park; spicy dinner at your comfort level (ask for 微辣 / mild).
  2. Day 2 — Giant Panda base. Go early; combine with a slow afternoon in Kuanzhai Alleys without overshopping.
  3. Day 3 — Leshan Big Buddha day trip (Leshan is on Sichuan’s permitted city list) or Jinsha Site Museum if you prefer city pace.
  4. Day 4 — Buffer / food tour day in Chengdu. Hotpot, dan dan, and market snacks — hydrate.
  5. Day 5 — Travel day to Xi’an. Morning flight is simpler than the long rail for many visitors; keep onward TWOV documents handy for any re-check narrative at hotels.
  6. Day 6 — Terracotta Warriors.
  7. Day 7 — Wall + Muslim Quarter + stele museum (optional).
  8. Day 8–9 — Soft exit buffer. One spare day is gold when flights rebook.

Critical: Sichuan’s TWOV stay area is a list of cities (including Chengdu and Leshan), not every corner of the province. Do not assume mountain counties outside the list are covered — check the official permitted-area list before side trips.

4) Four-hub sampler: Shanghai → Beijing → Xi’an → Chengdu (~10 days, tight)

Ambitious Best with domestic flights + 1–2 HSR legs Only if your 240-hour math has margin
  1. Days 1–2 — Shanghai. Bund + one museum; skip distant day trips.
  2. Days 3–4 — Beijing. Morning HSR or flight; Forbidden City + one Wall OR hutongs — not both stacked exhaustively.
  3. Days 5–6 — Xi’an. Warriors + wall; overnight toward Chengdu.
  4. Days 7–8 — Chengdu. Pandas + teahouse; no long mountain detours.
  5. Days 9–10 — Buffer and international departure from Chengdu (or backtrack to a convenient TWOV exit port).

This sampler burns time on airports. Most travelers will enjoy China more by picking two hubs from routes 1–3 instead.

Packing the policy into the plan

Before you book hotels

  • Confirm the city is inside the permitted stay area.
  • Choose hotels that accept foreign guests (passport registration).
  • Keep addresses in Chinese for taxi/Didi drivers.

Before you book the onward flight

  • Third country/region, confirmed seat, inside your hour limit.
  • Exit from a designated TWOV port.
  • Airline told you they accept TWOV boarding for your passport.
