Getting around, paying, and staying connected

Warm, factual tips for a short TWOV visit focused on Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xi’an. This page is general traveler guidance — not immigration law. For visa rules, see the policy page.

Transport

High-speed rail and metro make hub-hopping realistic inside a 10-day window.

High-speed rail

HSR between hubs

Beijing–Xi’an and Shanghai–Beijing are classic HSR legs. Bring your passport to collect/board. Book via the official 12306 channels or a reputable reseller; register early if using 12306 as passport verification can take time.

Metro

City metros

Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xi’an all have extensive metros. Station names are bilingual in major cities. Keep a small stack of cash or a transit QR code via Alipay/WeChat once set up.

Flights

Domestic hops

Chengdu–Xi’an or Shanghai–Chengdu often favors flying over a full-day train. Build security + domestic terminal transfer time into your 240-hour math.

TWOV reminder Moving cities is fine only inside permitted stay areas. Sichuan in particular is a named-city list around Chengdu — not a blank cheque for the whole province. Details on the policy page.

Payments

QR payments dominate daily life; cards and cash still matter as backups.

Alipay & WeChat Pay

  • Install before you fly and try foreign-card binding while you still have reliable home banking SMS/2FA.
  • Alipay’s foreign-visitor flows are often a bit smoother; WeChat Pay is everywhere once working.
  • Screenshot payment success pages when Wi‑Fi is flaky.

Cards & cash

  • Notify your bank of China travel; chip-and-PIN acceptance varies by merchant.
  • Carry a modest cash float (small bills) for street food, toilets, or offline stalls.
  • ATMs: use bank-branded machines in well-lit areas; decline unnecessary currency conversion.

SIM, eSIM & apps

Connectivity

  • A travel eSIM activated before landing avoids airport queues.
  • Airport physical SIMs from major carriers also work if you prefer a counter.
  • Hotel Wi‑Fi is common; expect a passport-linked login in some places.

Helpful apps

  • Maps: Apple Maps / Amap / Baidu — test offline pins for your hotels.
  • Ride-hail: Didi (foreigner-friendly flows vary; have hotel staff help the first time).
  • Translate: offline language packs before you go.
  • Rail/flights: 12306 and/or Trip.com as backup.
  • Messaging: WeChat is the default social/utility layer.

Some global services behave differently on mainland networks. Download what you need (maps, tickets, boarding passes) while you have open connectivity.

Etiquette & everyday comfort

Queues & volume

Metros and security lines move faster when everyone stands clear of doors. Keep phone calls moderate in quiet carriages.

Photos

Ask before photographing people up close. Follow posted rules at palaces, museums, and temples.

Food pace

In Chengdu and Xi’an, spice levels are a feature — start mild. Carry any personal medication you need; pharmacies may not match home brands.

Pitfalls that catch short-stay visitors

  • Underestimating airport→hotel time after a long-haul arrival (your sightseeing clock is not the immigration clock, but fatigue is real).
  • Booking a cute countryside stay outside the permitted TWOV area.
  • Leaving HSR collection / ID checks to the last minute.
  • Relying on a single payment method that fails offline.
  • Skipping accommodation registration on a private stay.
  • Planning “just one more city” without exit-day margin inside 240 hours.
If something goes wrong Overstay risk, medical issues, or force majeure: contact local exit-entry police / immigration promptly. NIA multi-language hotline: 12367 (+86-12367). Also notify your airline if your onward sector is at risk.

Quick pre-trip checklist

  • Passport validity (commonly expect ≥3 months) and eligible nationality confirmed on NIA list
  • Confirmed onward ticket to a third country/region within your hour limit
  • Entry & exit ports on the designated TWOV list
  • Hotels that accept foreign guests + Chinese addresses saved
  • Alipay/WeChat tested; eSIM/SIM plan ready
  • Offline maps, ticket PDFs, and this site’s source links saved
  • Airline explicitly okay with TWOV boarding for your routing
